Ms. Shelby Coke earned her Bachelor degree in Mass Communication emphasis in Public Relations with a minor in Business from Texas State University. Ms. Coke’s began her career in education at Stephens Elementary in 2015.
Ms. Coke enjoys traveling, working out, working on DIY projects, going to Texas country concerts, and hanging out with family and friends. She is excited to learn new things about teaching and furthering her career. Her favorite books include The Fault in Our Stars, Water for Elephants, and books authored by comedians.
Mrs. Abigail Martinez earned a Bachelor degree in Elementary Education with ESL and Reading endorsements. She has her Master of Education in School Counseling from the University of St. Thomas. Mrs. Martinez is entering her fourth year as a reading teacher. Mrs. Martinez has taught fifth and sixth grade in Aldine, and is now teaching third grade at Stephens Elementary.
Ms. Martinez enjoys reading a good book and being outdoors biking and running.She loves to take on new “do it yourself” projects and is interested in photography. One of her favorite books is Mufara’s Beautiful Daughters by John Steptoe. Her favorite Author is Jodi Picoult.

Ms. Jan Jeanlouis earned a Bachelor of Science in Speech Communication from the University of Texas at Austin. This is her 28th year working in education and 21st year at Stephens Elementary.
Ms. Jeanlouis worked in Houston ISD from 1988-1995 teaching 2nd and 1st grade. She has worked at Stephens since 1995 teaching 3rd and 4th grade. She was teacher of the Year in 1999 she earned her ESL Certification from the University of Houston in 1989. She is also Certified to teach GT.
Ms.Jeanlouis likes board games and word games like Scrabble, Scattergories, Mad Lib, and Taboo. She is curious about U.S. History and modern day politics. Some of her favorite books include Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, Oh the Places You'll Go! by Dr. Seuss, and Love You Forever by Robert Munsch.
Ms. Peggy Shawaker earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Teaching with a major in Elementary Education and minor in Reading. She was able to obtain her degree with a golf scholarship from Sam Houston State University.
She began her career in education in 1983. Ms. Shawaker has been teaching for 30 years.. She has experience teaching grades K-5 and has taught in Conroe ISD for 5 years, Willis ISD for 3 years, Huntsville ISD for 7 years, and The John Cooper School for 12 years before coming to Aldine ISD.
Ms. Shawaker enjoys golfing, watching sports at all levels, traveling, road trips, and swimming. She is curious on how the brain works, The infinity of the universe, the changing environment, and saving endangered animals/species. Her favorite books are The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, Artists Way by Julia Cameron, and Teaching with the Brain in Mind by Eric Jensen.
Mrs. Emily Kubecka earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Austin where she majored in Ancient History and Classical Civilizations, and Classical Latin. She began her career in education in 2015. Mrs. Kubecka also holds a certification in ESL and Special Education.
Mrs. Kubecka enjoys being outdoors, gardening, restoring antique furniture, and cooking. She is curious about super hero powers. Her favorite author at the moment is Patrick Ness.
Mrs. Marilyn Lugo earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Houston. She began her career in education in 2012 in the district of Galena Park teaching 8th grade reading. While she was there, she was awarded the Rookie Teacher of the Year award her first year. She then joined Aldine ISD in 2013 and taught 7th and 8th grade ELAR at Grantham Academy. After teaching at Grantham for 2 years, she came to Stephens Elementary where she currently teaches 3rd grade bilingual Reading and Writing.
Ms. Lugo enjoys reading, traveling, and running. She is also interested in other cultures, languages, and places around the world that she has yet to discover. Some of her favorite books include Inez del Alma Mia by Isabel Allende, Love in the time of Cholera- Gabriel Garcia Marquez, One Hundred Years of Solitude also by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
Mr. Luis DeLeon received a Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Houston. He began his career in Education in 2013 at Johnson Elementary where he taught first and third grade. He joined the Stephens Elementary team in 2015 where he is currently teaching third grade.
Mr. DeLeon enjoys reading, archery, playing video games, watching movies, traveling, and sports. He is curious about history and space. Some of his favorite books include Cat in the Hat, The Hunger Game Series, The Harry Potter Series, and Where the Wild Things Are.
Ms. Christina Garcia earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a Spanish minor from the University of Houston Downtown. She also earned her Master of Education from Sam Houston State University. Ms. Garcia earned her certification in education through Aldine’s Homegrown Scholarship Program.
She began her career in education in 2006 in Aldine. She taught Pre-K for 3 years before joining the Stephens Elementary team in 2015. She holds a Bilingual Education certification as well as a certification in Administration.
Ms. Garcia passion is reading. She is also curious about history and foreign places. Some of her favorite books include Little Women, The Secret Garden, Green Eggs and Ham, Wuthering Heights, and The Hunger Games Series.
Mrs. Maria Avalos earned a degree in Health Education and Psychology from the University of Houston. This is her 4th year in Education and 1st year at Stephens Elementary teaching SEI Math, Science and Social Studies.
Ms. Avalos enjoys watching movies, reading books, and walking her dogs. She is curious about how the brain works and space exploration. Her favorite books is the Hunger Game Series.
